Spinal Decompression vs. Chiropractic Adjustment: What’s the Difference?

Spinal decompression and chiropractic adjustments are both conservative treatments used for certain neck and back conditions, but they work differently.

Chiropractic adjustments use controlled force applied to specific joints of the spine or extremities. The goal is to improve joint mobility, reduce stiffness, and help restore normal movement. Adjustments may be used for conditions involving back pain, neck pain, joint restriction, and certain musculoskeletal injuries.

Spinal decompression uses a specialized table to gently apply controlled traction to the cervical or lumbar spine. This treatment may be used for patients experiencing symptoms associated with disc problems, such as a bulging or herniated disc, or certain types of radiating arm or leg pain.

At Atlantic Health & Chiropractic, we may use chiropractic adjustments and spinal decompression individually or together depending on the patient's condition, examination findings, and symptoms.

For example, a patient experiencing lower back pain with pain radiating into the leg may benefit from a treatment plan that includes lumbar decompression along with chiropractic care, therapeutic exercise, and other supportive therapies.

Neither treatment is appropriate for every patient. An examination helps us determine the likely cause of your symptoms and which treatment options are appropriate for your condition.
